The phenomenon of feeling someone’s presence in an empty room (video)

Back in the late 19th century, scientists tried to solve the mystery: why do people sometimes feel that there is someone next to them in an empty room?

How writes Science Alert, modern science has proven that this is not fiction or an accident, providing explanations for what is happening.

The SPR, the British Society for Psychical Research, which was founded in 1882, conducted a large-scale survey of 17,000 people in the US, UK and Europe. Scientists have tried to find out how often people encounter signs that predict death. In 1894, the results of a survey called the Census of Hallucinations were published. Research has shown that such signs are perceived too often to be attributed to chance – every forty-third of those surveyed reported them.

Subsequently, scientists noted that the described cases from SPR are similar to hypnagogia – hallucinatory experiences that occur on the verge of sleep and awakening.

Currently, scientists associate the feeling of the presence of a foreign being with the phenomenon of sleep paralysis, which 7% of adults have experienced at least once in their lives. During sleep paralysis, a person wakes up but feels unable to move due to a physiological mechanism that stops muscle activity during sleep. That is, the body still remains motionless, while the consciousness is already active, and this can cause a feeling of the presence of something unusual and even threatening.

Scientists note that similar signs of presence are found in the myths and legends of different peoples. For example, the Portuguese Fradinho da Mao Furada is able to penetrate people’s dreams, and Ogun Oru from the tales of the Yoruba people in Nigeria can be sent by magic.

Research supports another possibility – the feeling of presence can be caused by certain signals from the body. For example, experiments conducted in 2006 showed that stimulating a certain part of the brain can create the sensation of a “shadow figure” that appears to be part of your own body. These studies help to understand the nature and origin of the mysterious phenomenon.
