Association of Professional Nutritionists to be created in Greece

Specialists of the Union of Dietetics and Nutritionists welcome the announcement of the Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis (ERTNEWS 04/06/2024) on the creation of a public legal entity in which they will all be united.

This will combat illegitimate practices carried out by persons who do not have the formal and basic qualifications of a dietitian. Will also be introduced criminal sanctions for illegal medical practice. Professional activities are adjusted by creating a regulatory framework for professional ethics, disciplinary law and administrative sanctions.

The sector acquires a single trade union representation under the control of the state and a state scientific consultant on nutrition and dietetics.

The long absence of an effective institutional structure created a phenomenon of lawlessness, a field open to people who were often completely unsuited to take advantage of publicity or even social media to address food issues. At the same time, the “specialists” in a number of cases had nothing to do with professional nutrition and did not have the necessary scientific knowledge, which created obvious risks for public health.

Compulsory legislation highlights the importance of nutrition to public health. Let us recall that in a conversation with ertnews Adonis Georgiadis, referring to Ministry of Health campaign for healthy eating, noted: “My goal is to make the “Union of Nutritionists of Greece” (Ένωση Διαιτολόγων Διατροφολόγων Ελλάδος) a legal entity. In this way, every possible contribution will be made to how we should eat and lead a healthy lifestyle.”
