Greece: growth in deposits from households and businesses in March 2024


Household and business deposits rose by €1.675 billion in March 2024 after two months of continued decline.

According to the Bank of Greece, business deposits increased by 1.278 million euros in March 2024, compared with a decrease of 911 million euros in the previous month. At the same time, household deposits in March 2024 showed an increase of 396 million euros. Overall, the monthly net flow of total deposits was positive at €957 million in March 2024, compared to a negative net flow of €1,803 million in February 2024.

Government deposits decreased by €718 million in March 2024, compared to a contraction of €737 million in the previous month, and the annual rate of change was -24.5% from -10.2% in the previous month.

Private sector deposits increased by €1.675 million in March 2024, compared with a contraction of €1.067 million in the previous month, with the annual rate of change decreasing to 2.6% from 3.0% in the previous month.

Business deposits increased by €1.278 million in March 2024, compared with a contraction of €911 million in the previous month, with the annual rate of change decreasing to 1.6% from 2.4% in the previous month. In particular, MXE deposits increased by 1.507 million euros against a decrease of 536 million euros in the previous month. Deposits from insurance companies and other financial institutions fell by 229 million euros, compared with a decline of 374 million euros in the previous month.

Deposits from households and private non-profit organizations increased by €396 million in March 2024, compared with a decline of €156 million in the previous month, with the annual rate of change slowing to 2.9% from 3.1% last month.
