Greek police conducted intensive check cars in the northern suburbs of Athens on Monday morning to ensure they were equipped with snow chains in anticipation of overnight snowfalls.
Anti-slip chains are indeed mandatory from 10 pm on Monday, January 29, 2024, in accordance with the decision of the director of traffic police, media reports. The decision to use chains or similar anti-slip devices applies to vehicles of all categories, unless these vehicles have special tires, while driving on the entire road network of the Prefecture of Attica.
Drivers who do not comply will be fined €80. The decision to introduce the measure and the fine, valid from October 1 to April 30 each year “when prevailing conditions require it,” was taken in September 2022 after heavy snowfalls stranded hundreds of motorists on the streets of Attica.
PS On Monday, January 29, snowfall is forecast in the northern suburbs of Attica and Athens. Why motorists in the southern suburbs, where snow falls “once in a lifetime”, must have snow chains is a secret that only the government knows… However, many Greek laws have this peculiarity: they are strict and often ridiculous, but, fortunately , are not mandatory.
