Up to 30% price increase for essentials from August 1st

Shopping has become like a “hunt” for groceries and essential goods, including household chemicals.

Consumers follow promotions, discounts and great offers in supermarkets in order to “gain” at least something and masterfully “make ends meet” by the end of the month. Everyone is looking for products at the best price.

With energy prices still high, household bills are rising and payment obligations are depressing. Looks like it’s going to be a hot summer financially. And even if the consumer’s pocket has been empty for a long time, a new increase in prices for essential goods is coming. From August 1, an increase of even 30% is expected, detergents and cosmetics are among them. Presumably, dairy products will also rise in price, up to 7%. Prices for pasta will increase from autumn.

Consumers in the past five months, due to the energy crisis and the war in Ukraine, have seen their weekly and monthly supermarket spending on the rise. Market participants believe that the new increase will have a direct impact on consumer traffic, as citizens will be forced to further “cut” everything that has already been “cut” more than once.

Greeks are expected to spend less and less money on groceries in the coming months. This is the result of a study by the Hellenic Business and Retail Association (SELPE) with the scientific support of the ELTRUN laboratory of the Athens University of Economics. Every second consumer says that they will reduce the cost of buying products in the next six months.

And this is because he is saving money to pay current bills. An atmosphere of pessimism prevails among consumers. The study shows that “the current period is considered the worst in the last two years.”
