The use of a mask is the most effective non-drug measure of protection against Covid-19 besides vaccines, reducing the number of coronavirus infections by 53%, according to a new international study, the most comprehensive to date, in which Greek scientists also participated.
Researchers from the Universities of Edinburgh in Scotland and Alone in Melbourne have evaluated and analyzed 35 scientific studies from different countries.
The study also involved Professor of Epidemiology Europe Theodoratu of the University of Edinburgh, a graduate of the Faculty of Biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Τμήματος Βιολογίας του ΑΠΘ (2003).
The scientists concluded that of all non-pharmacological interventions, the mask reduces the likelihood of contracting coronavirus by 57% compared to distance (25%). Therefore, the researchers emphasized the need to continue to use the mask in parallel with vaccinations.
Research has shown that regular hand washing also provides significant protection (reducing the risk of infection by 53%), but due to the small number of relevant studies, the statistical reliability of this estimate was found to be significantly lower than using a mask.
