Traditional “funny fights” with the use of pyrotechnics took place on Chios, thus “conveying the good news of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
The opposing sides of the two parishes gathered together in the coastal area of Vrontados and began a procession with the goal of reaching a place where they would part ways and take up “battle positions”.
As soon as the bells rang at 23:00, the first massive rocket launches and colorful fireworks turned night into day.
There were two pauses in total: one at 10:45 pm to allow the faithful to enter the parishes safely, and another after 12 midnight to allow the faithful to leave.
On the morning of Easter Sunday, residents of the municipality of Chios, together with volunteers, will collect shell casings from rockets fired at night. According to the publication “Citizen of Chios” (“Πολίτης Χίου”), this year for the first time, security measures were significantly strengthened. Chios municipal authorities have distributed portable fire extinguishers and installed additional fire nozzles around the perimeter of churches, while simultaneously beginning a widespread replacement of the wire mesh installed each year to protect homes and parishes from falling fireworks “remnants.”
