In Symi, Antikyra and Arachova, barbecues started smoking: Greeks celebrate Easter on a grand scale


Greek Easter is blessed with rich, colorful and symbolic traditions that include a number of celebrations.

Both the eve of Easter and the days following the event are full of symbolic events and traditions that all Greeks follow. On May 5, the day of the Resurrection of the Lord, believers adhere to the age-old custom of roasting lamb on spits. On Symi, the island's municipal authorities set up 20 barbecues with traditional skewers in the picturesque harbor to impress the estimated 3,000 tourists who flood the island. Among them are many who came from Turkey – citizens who also celebrate Greek Easter.

Antikythera also hosts celebrations with the traditional roasting of lamb.

Easter is also celebrated in Arachova, where today 16 barbecues are smoking. Residents and guests are in a festive mood: in addition to celebrating the Resurrection of the Lord, three-day festivities are held in honor of the feast of St. George.
