Bridge – "pearl" Greece, setting world records

The beautiful bridge, which has received worldwide admiration, connects Aitoloakarnania with Evrytania. The structure set 4 world records.

Over the waters of the artificial lake Kremasta, an impressive bridge connects the province of Valtos Etoloakarnania with the prefecture of Evrytania. We are talking about the Tatarna Bridge, which was built from 1965 to 1970, the designer of which was the civil engineer Aristarchus Ikonomou, professor of statics and dynamics in the department of civil engineering of the Polytechnic School of the University of Patras.

This is the first bridge in Greece that was built using the cantilever method, that is, section by section. The construction of the main building began with intermediate supports (pillars) and, as it developed, the concrete section moved towards construction “in the air”. The bridge spans (i.e. the distances between the supporting elements of the structure) are 97 + 196 + 150 meters, made of special concrete using buffers.

As for the name, the bridge was “named” by the nearby monastery of Our Lady of Tatarna (Παναγίας της Τατάρνας), founded in 1556.

The bridge received international awards for its technical design, and also set four world records, one of which concerns the central span (arch) of 196 meters, the other – the outer span of 150.5 meters, the curvature of the first opening, as well as its one-way slope of 52.5 meters long meters. In the past, there was a stone bridge in place of the bridge. First battle of the Greeks of Rumeli against the Turks happened on this historic bridge in 1821, and events dedicated to this event are held annually in early June.

The modern Tatarny Bridge is the crown jewel of the region, attracting thousands of visitors every year to admire the impressive building and green landscape.
