Places in European cities have become known, when visiting which you need to be on guard. In these countries, sightseeing can get expensive, because pickpockets literally hover there like flies.
The list has been compiled by UK travel insurance comparison experts and, in particular, Quotezone.co.uk, based on an index of victims of pickpockets. The index ranks the most popular European holiday destinations based on the percentage of pickpocketing mentions in visitor reviews of the top five tourist attractions in each country.
Italy comes first
Italy tops the international rankings. Visitors to the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and the Italian Pantheon in Rome, as well as the Duomo di Milano in Milan and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence reported the highest number of stolen personal items in online traveler reviews.
France is the second most visited country by Britons, and also the second most reported pickpockets, with 251 per million visitors.
Spain came third on the pickpocket index, with Las Ramblas perhaps surprisingly the worst of the five tourist destinations for the number of items stolen.
