Top 10 places in Europe where you can get robbed

Places in European cities have become known, when visiting which you need to be on guard. In these countries, sightseeing can get expensive, because pickpockets literally hover there like flies.

The list has been compiled by UK travel insurance comparison experts and, in particular, Quotezone.co.uk, based on an index of victims of pickpockets. The index ranks the most popular European holiday destinations based on the percentage of pickpocketing mentions in visitor reviews of the top five tourist attractions in each country.

Italy comes first

Italy tops the international rankings. Visitors to the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and the Italian Pantheon in Rome, as well as the Duomo di Milano in Milan and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence reported the highest number of stolen personal items in online traveler reviews.

France is the second most visited country by Britons, and also the second most reported pickpockets, with 251 per million visitors.

Spain came third on the pickpocket index, with Las Ramblas perhaps surprisingly the worst of the five tourist destinations for the number of items stolen.

What to pay attention to

Greg Wilson, Founder and CEO quotezone.co.uksaid: “Theft can happen anywhere, and tourist spots are convenient places for criminals to snatch the wallets and bags of holidaymakers while they are out sightseeing. Iconic sites such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Trevi Fountain in Rome are particularly popular among pickpockets because they can move unnoticed among large crowds of people.”

He also added: “Many holidaymakers are unaware that some of the UK's most popular holiday destinations have some of the highest levels of theft in Europe. Our research found surprising results: Italy has the most pickpocket reports, but France and Spain have much higher numbers of tourists “.

“It's important to always be vigilant, leave valuables such as expensive jewelry in a hotel safe, and always travel with a secure zip-lock bag to protect phones and wallets, or even a money belt. Try to never leave personal items unattended, as companies, Travel insurance providers require travelers to take “reasonable care” and may reject insurance claims for theft if items are left unattended.” – he said.
