At the 2024 World Travel Awards ceremony held in Berlin on Wednesday, Athens has been named a leading European holiday destination.
The highest award received by the Director General of the Tourism Development and Promotion Company of the Municipality of Athens (EATA), Ioannis Georgizas. Athens Distinction at the 31st Ceremony World Travel Awards demonstrates the municipality’s long-term strategy and efforts under the “This is Athens” program over the past decade to sustainably develop tourism in the city.
This is achieved through its promotion and recognition as a competitive tourism destination, attracting tourists 12 months a year. In 2023, Athens reached a new record for international arrivals, exceeding 7 million visitors.
This week (5-7 March) one of the largest tourism exhibitions in Europe, ITB Berlin, took place, and Athens took part in it, occupying a special place on the stand of the Greek National Tourism Organization.
