The price of feta, the favorite product of the Greeks, is growing rapidly, surpassing all previous “records”. There are many complaints that say that even abroad this type of cheese can be found cheaper than in Greece.
After olive oil, feta cheese is now considered a luxury item in Greek households. It seems that just recently feta was selling for 6 and 7 euros per kilo. But in just a year and a half it rose to 10 euros (despite the fact that the product is included in program of permanent price reduction by 5%), and has currently reached 18 euros per kilogram. Only numbers:
Feta cost:
- From a barrel, by weight: up to 14 euros/kg.
- Packaged: up to 18 euros/kg.
Growth of 120% over the past two years.
Manufacturer price for sheep and goat milk:
- 2024: 1.50-1.55 euros/kg.
- 2023: 1.75-1.80 euros/kg.
Change: -17%.
Feta production and export:
- Domestic production: 135,000 tons.
- Export: 88,000 tons.
Export volume: 600 million euros.
Greek feta in international markets:
- Retail price: 12.5-19 euros/kg.
- Sales volume: -5%.
“The price of feta under no circumstances should exceed 10-10.5 euros per kilogram on the shelf. Otherwise, anything above this price is pure speculation,” says Panagiotis Peveretos, president of the Hellenic Livestock Association (SEK), adding, that “the manufacturer’s price has decreased, but the retail price is growing.”
“It should be reduced directly to the profits that industrial enterprises and supermarkets have, which have set a ceiling that is inflated by 30%,” he points out. It is noted that enterprises purchase goat and sheep milk from producers from which feta cheese is produced at a price of 1.50-1.55 euros per kilogram. Whereas just a few months ago the agreed price was 1.75-1.80 euros.
