The Egnatia and Venizelou roads in Thessaloniki will be fully completed on Monday, January 29

Thessaloniki’s main metro line will be operational in November 2024, while the Egnatia and Venizelou roads will be handed over to the city on Monday.

This was pointed out by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Nikos Tahiaos during his speech at the 7th Conference on “Regional Development and New Infrastructures”, held on Thursday evening, 25/01, in Thessaloniki.

Speaking about extending the metro line to Macedonia Airport, he noted that “this is the next thing we plan to do in earnest.” The official noted that the plan, which is being developed and will be announced soon, provides for the extension of the line to Tumba and Harilau.

Regarding the FlyOver flyover, it is noted that “you can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs.” Mr. Tahiaos noted that in all projects, during their implementation, sometimes “some problems arise.”

“I am glad that finally the members of the coordination committee created by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras will take on the responsibilities assigned to them. I believe that in a few days it will be announced that the Traffic Management Center for the Central Macedonia Region will finally be operational,” – he emphasized.

Answering the question why he is so confident that the construction of FlyOver will be completed normally, the official emphasized that this is “a project that is carried out with special characteristics, since technically there is absolute competence of the contractor for its implementation and its financing is guaranteed, which is largely based on bank capital. Banks are seeking its completion and compliance with implementation schedules.”

In this context, he expressed the hope that “no complications will arise during the implementation of the FlyOver overpass project, which, according to him, hides either a political or ideological background.” In conclusion, he noted that the state infrastructure is not enough for Thessaloniki to actively move forward and emphasized that a strategy is needed.

The conference was organized by the Hellenic Institute for Research and Development (ELINEKA), The Politic Calendar – Thessaloniki Agenda, Myportal.gr and the newspaper “Politicians”.
