Thessaloniki prepares for bad weather

The onset of cold weather, according to meteorologists, has especially “strained” the municipal authorities of northern Greece! In fact, the Municipality of Thessaloniki is already taking measures and is on high alert.

As part of wider emergency weather planning, authorities will be operating at increased levels from Saturday 20/01 to 22/01, when a wave of severe weather is expected.

Structures have been created to provide heating services. Their goal is to provide temporary housing to protect vulnerable citizens due to severe bad weather and cold. The following institutions will operate:

  • Shelter for the homeless, “Υπνωτήριο Αστέγων” (Andreu Georgiou, 5, former 13, tel. 2310528811), from 17:00 to 9:00 the next day.
  • Center for the homeless, “Ανοικτό Κέντρο Ημέρας Αστέγων” (Monastiriou 62, tel. 2313316615), 24/7.

The premises will be serviced by specialized staff of the structures (social worker, nurse, doctor, etc.). In order to protect vulnerable groups, two branches of open centers for the protection of older people (KAPI) will be open from 08.00 to 20.00 on Monday 22/01:

• 4th department, Grigoriou Lambrakis, 42, tel. 2310212002 (4ο παράρτημα, Γρηγορίου Λαμπράκη 42).
• 5th Ward, Alexandrias 27, tel. 2310820110 (5ο παράρτημα, Αλεξανδρείας 27).

Throughout the duration of the emergency measures, in cooperation with the Municipal Police Department, blankets, sleeping bags, croissants and water will be distributed to the homeless. In addition, cooperation is ongoing with organizations involved in the protection of homeless people (NGOs, EKAB).
