Flamingos appeared on the beaches of Vouliagmeni and Artemis

Residents of Vouliagmeni and Artemis, who were lucky enough to see flamingos appearing one on each of the two beaches of Attica, were quite surprised.

According to wildlife organization ANIMA, flamingos typically live in brackish waters such as lagoons and river deltas, although experts cannot explain how exactly the birds ended up in Attica, citing that they may have been “blown away by strong winds” “. Organization's Facebook message:

“Flamingos on the beaches? For a week now we have been receiving dozens of calls regarding the presence of flamingos on Vouliagmeni beach, and since yesterday another one in Artemis. The birds are mature and healthy. We don't know exactly how they ended up on this side of Attica, but flamingos in suitable habitat can be found in Voukari Megaron. The flamingo spotted in Vouliagmeni has a ring and ANIMA has already contacted the Greek Banding Center regarding the bird's findings. Information will be received in the next few days. The birds will be caught and transported to a more suitable habitat. Thank you for your interest and information, we are monitoring both cases and will intervene if necessary.”
