Winter weather hits Europe (video)

Freezing rains and heavy snowfalls – this is how January turned out in Europe. Some countries have declared a high level of weather danger.

Euronews talks about the cancellation of hundreds of flights, interruptions in public transport, and accidents on European roads.

In Denmark, for example, heavy snowfalls and stormy winds limited rail traffic. Traffic on some highways is blocked by numerous accidents. Authorities are urging residents of the country to postpone scheduled meetings and, if possible, work remotely. Meteorologists promise better weather by the end of the week.

In Norway The capital’s airport was temporarily closed due to heavy snowfall. In Oslo, rail and road transport is limited, and city buses are running behind schedule. Police advise staying at home if possible.

In France On Wednesday, January 17, an orange alert level was declared in several more departments in the north of the country due to freezing rain. Residents fall and get injured on icy sidewalks, and motorists have difficulty controlling their cars—many traffic accidents have been recorded.

In Munich and Frankfurt am Main in Germany Almost a thousand flights were canceled on Wednesday; the situation is no better in other German cities. Due to heavy snowfalls, schools are closed, high-speed trains are disrupted, and flights are delayed or canceled at airports.

In Belgium, in the province of Luxembourg, the highest red alert level has been declared due to freezing rain. Authorities urge drivers, especially trucks, to be extremely vigilant on the roads.
