63-year-old shipowner found dead in his home in Voula

Imad Zein, a 63-year-old Greek shipowner, was found dead after he allegedly shot himself in the basement of the house where he lived in Voula.

The man was discovered Thursday afternoon, shortly after 4 p.m., in the basement of his home by his wife and bodyguard. Authorities believe it was a suicide because, according to police, he sent his wife a message saying he was going to commit suicide.

“Forget me, I have nothing to offer you, forgive me for what I’m about to do”– the shipowner wrote to his wife before committing suicide with a pistol.

Imad Zein was the head of a large shipping company, Naftomar Shipping & Trading. The company was founded in 1972 in Beirut, and in 1991 moved to Athens, where it opened an office in the fashionable Voula district. NAFTOMAR is a major player in the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Mediterranean basin. Company fleet is 21 dry cargo ships and tankers, including gas carriers.
