Death toll rises from deadly Cyclone Daniel

The tragic list of people who died due to the disaster is growing.

A 69-year-old resident of Volos, with whom contact has been interrupted since yesterday night, September 7, became the seventh victim of Cyclone Daniel. The man’s body was found in the sea. As it became known, he left his home in Volos at 11:00 pm to replenish the supply of drinking water that had dried up in the house, but never returned.

An investigation began immediately, and today the man’s body was found on Anavros beach by voluntary helpers of Ειδικών Δυνάμεων Μαγνησίας. The man was taken to Volos General Hospital “Achillopoulio”, where doctors pronounced him dead.

According to volunteers working in the affected areas, an elderly woman was found dead in a house in Palamas Karditsa, becoming the eighth victim.

Meanwhile, the regional governor of Thessaly, Kostas Agorastos, announced this morning that 8 villages in Karditsa are subject to eviction (evacuation). “The situation is complicated. Pelion has a serious problem with traffic and transport access. There are problems with access to some settlements. Some were reached by sea,” he said in a conversation with SKY channel reporters.

Mr. Agorastos noted that the main efforts of rescuers will be focused on Karditsa. Evacuation operations will begin today and will be carried out by all means – from the air (by helicopters) and by army units with heavy equipment on the ground.

“Eight villages of Karditsa need help: Agia Triada, Rizovuni, Kalogriana, Anyandero, Metamorfosi, Vlochos, Koskina, Maratea,” he added.

“These are people who remained in the villages and are now on the highest points, on the roofs of houses, waiting for rescuers to pick them up. 15 helicopters will be used,” the official explained.
