The European Union plans to deploy a new military mission in West Africa, the purpose of which is to help African countries in the fight against terrorists.
About this, referring to sources, writes the German edition of Welt am Sonntag. The newspaper specifies that a decision on a new military-civilian mission may be made as early as October:
“Police and soldiers, the number of which has not yet been precisely determined, will be deployed in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Benin.”
This option, presumably, will be the topic of discussion of the heads of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs at the autumn meeting of the EU member states. According to the newspaper’s sources, the mission in West Africa will be aimed at strengthening local security forces and technical support.
Peter Stano, Foreign Service Spokesman EUpreviously pledged to support any action by ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African Countries) regarding Niger, writes BB.LV. He stressed that the European Union is counting on the opportunity to reach an agreement and resolve the problem through diplomacy.
