Ferry service Cyprus-Greece will resume on May 31

Ferry service between Cyprus and Greece will resume work on May 31according to a recent announcement by operators Scandro Holding Ltd.

The Cyprus-flagged ferry MV Daleela, which was the only passenger ship on the line last year, will continue to operate in 2023.

Ferry service between Limassol and Piraeus was suspended for 21 years before Scandro Holding won a tender announced by the Deputy Cyprus Ministry of Shipping last year with the aim of restoring maritime traffic between Cyprus and Greece.

The Cypriot flagged ferry MV Daleela, which was the only passenger ship last year, will return to service on May 31, 2023.

The revived Cyprus-Greece ferry, which sailed for the first time in mid-June 2022, made its last return trip of the season in September 2022.

MV Daleela made a total of 22 round trips carrying 7,162 passengers to Aphrodite Island. He also shipped 2,250 cars and motorcycles there, as well as about 200 pets.

According to representatives of the Scandro holding, after reviewing the feedback from last year, the ship will operate with improved services to improve the quality of passenger service.

The ferry has a restaurant, cafeteria and clinic on board, as well as 38 first class cabins (110 passengers), 68 second class cabins and 110 outdoor seating. It can also accommodate up to 100 vehicles.

Cyprus-Greece ferry includes Larnaca port in 2023 itinerary

The service was restored after receiving special permission from the European Union, which allowed the state to subsidize the otherwise unviable route.

The government has offered a subsidy of 5.5 million euros per year to interest ship owners in a regular ferry service between Limassol and Piraeus.

In addition to the port of Limassol, Scandro Holding Ltd included the port of Larnaca in response to requests from travelers.

In comments to the Cyprus News Agency, Larnaca Mayor Andreas Viras said port operators Kition Ocean had reached an agreement with ferry operators, Scandro Holding, to include Larnaca on the ferry route.

After making changes to the schedule, the ferry to Greece will depart from the port of Limassol from May 31, when the service resumes, until the end of July. The port of Larnaca will be activated from August, and flights will be operated until September 1.

According to Viras, the city is ideally located for convenient communication throughout the island, and its infrastructure is also at a high level.

“Maritime communication between Cyprus and Greece through the port has been a long-standing request and we believe this is good for both Larnaca and the island as a whole,” Viras said.

Local tourism circles are pleased with the decision, which will revitalize the port of Larnaca, currently under renovation, as well as increase the number of tourists arriving from Greece, according to the Financial Mirror.

When the ferry service was restored after 21 years, Larnaca expressed its displeasure that the authorities decided to include only services from Limassol.

It is estimated that the journey from Larnaca to Piraeus is two hours longer than the 30 hour journey from Limassol port.
