The condition of three of the six injured in an accident on the Athens-Thessaloniki highway on Sunday early in the morning is critical, two are intubated. The bus driver has been released.
A 19-year-old young man died in an accident near the Platamonas tunnel. Two victims were taken to the Papageorgiou hospital with severe head injuries – a 23-year-old man was operated on, a 28-year-old is waiting for the end of the examination, after which he will also be operated on.
Three victims from another car – an 8-year-old girl and her parents, 42 and 44 years old. They received minor injuries. The bus driver with 75 passengers was first arrested and then released. The police statement says:
“April 23, 2023, at approximately 01.30 am, at km 402.950 of the Athens-Thessaloniki highway, in the area of Platamonas (Pieria), a private bus following the Thessaloniki-Athens route collided with a car that was at a temporary stop on the emergency lane, which then collided with another private vehicle also at a temporary stop on the emergency lane.As a result of the collision, a 19-year-old man was fatally injured and three young people were injured.3 people were also injured, including a minor, who were in the second car.The bus driver was arrested, and a case has been filed against him. A preliminary investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident is being conducted by the Highway Traffic Police Department PATHE Pieria.”
A statement about the accident was published by the ΚΤΕΛ Thessaloniki, which notes that “despite the efforts of an experienced driver, the situation of the cars was such that it was not possible to avoid an accident.” The statement says, writes newsbeast.gr:
“Our company’s double-decker bus with 75 passengers, which traveled from Thessaloniki to Athens, following the route and moving at normal speed, as shown by telematics, collided with two cars parked on the national road after leaving the tunnel in the Leptokaria area. Despite the efforts of an experienced driver , the position of the vehicles was such that the accident could not be avoided.The police told us that there was one dead passenger in the car.The passengers of the bus, as well as the driver, are all right, and they all arrived in Kifissos at 9 am on Sunday by bus sent directly by our company. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the authorities. Our company expresses its deepest sorrow over the death of one of our citizens and wishes a speedy recovery to the victims.”
