A bear visited the beach of Pelion and feasted on rabbits

The inhabitants of the village of Damuchari on Pelion are concerned about the visit of the bear, which caused significant damage – he ate the rabbits and destroyed the room where they were kept.

The incident happened about a month ago, the inhabitants of Magnesia were amazed to find traces of the huge paws of the beast on the beach. The breeder Mr. Manolis Vassiliou says:

“At first I didn’t realize it was a bear. From the broken door, I realized that it was a large animal, but I could not believe that it was a bear. The actions of the animal showed incredible ferocity. He broke down the door, tore off the lids of the feeders, and even bent the rabbit cages to take them out and eat them. There are large claw and bite marks all over the paddock.”

Mr. Vassiliou says the beast ate small rabbits that were a few days old, and only three escaped its claws. The breeder angrily describes the damage done to his livestock and equipment.

The president of the Nea Ionia Hunting Association, Yannis Tirchas, says that this is not the first time a bear has been seen in Magnesia, because these animals are able to travel long distances in search of food:

“About a year and a half ago, we had a similar incident in Ano Querasia and Veneto, where a bear was devouring beehives. We haven’t had an incident since then until recently when it happened in Damuhari. Bears are animals that adapt very easily to their environment. Their peculiarity is that they can travel long distances in search of food. In other words, the fact that his footprints were even found on the beach shouldn’t surprise us.”

Asked if it might have been another large animal, Mr. Tirhas stated that photographs of the tracks indicate that it was a bear. He drew attention to the fact that the animal has not yet been found and there is a risk of its attack on cars, as the number of tourists increases as the weather improves:

“Now that the number of tourists will gradually increase, and holiday homes will open for the summer or other animal invasions will be confirmed, it is very likely that even cars may be attacked. A bear can survive for a long time by eating animals or fruits of trees, which abound in Pelion. I’m sure he won’t be hungry.”

Regarding the origin of the bear and how it ended up in Magnesia, since the area is not suitable for permanent habitation, Mr. Tirchas refers to the case of the white tiger:

“Just as someone left a white tiger in a garbage can in Attica, it is very likely that the bear reached Pelion due to human intervention. Another possibility is that he went through other prefectures, through Olympos and Kissavos, to get here.”

Mr Tierhas reminds that this animal is a protected species and urges hunters and residents to be very careful, as killing it will lead to criminal prosecution, writes newsbeast.gr.
