Greek police rescued 92… completely naked migrants

On Friday evening, Greek border guards in Evros found 92 illegal immigrants – completely naked and without any personal belongings.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called the incident at the border a disgrace: “Turkey is behaving shamefully.” And Immigration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarakis writes CNN Greecesaid on Twitter:

“We expect Ankara to investigate the incident and finally secure its borders with the European Union. Turkey’s behavior towards the 92 migrants we rescued at the border is a disgrace to civilization.”

The naked migrants were noticed and detained by border guards. The survivors informed the Greek authorities that Turkish military vehicles had brought them to the coast of Evros. Then they took away their personal belongings and clothes, put them in plastic boats and pushed the boats towards the Greek side.

Literally the day before, at the summit of the ministers of the interior EU in Luxembourg, Minister for the Protection of Citizens Takis Theodorikakos spoke, raising the issue of Turkish provocations and Ankara’s instrumentalization of immigration. He showed evidence that the problem was not Greek but European.

Announcement of the Ministry of Citizens’ Protection:

Police officers of the Border Guard Department, together with Frontex, rescued 92 illegal immigrants from the banks of the Evros River, abandoned at the scene completely naked and without personal belongings. Turkey continues to openly use immigrants, violate human rights, and violate international law. Yesterday her provocation crossed all boundaries. The people, as they themselves told the Greek police, were taken to Evros in three cars of the Turkish authorities, and then boarded plastic boats to cross to the Greek side.

Recall that the Minister for the Protection of Citizens, Takis Theodorikakos, yesterday condemned Turkey’s behavior in the Council of Ministers of the Interior and Public Order in Luxembourg, and also informed the competent European Commissioner of its daily problems by presenting audiovisual materials. While Greece effectively defends its borders with respect for human life, Turkey continues to ignore not only international law, but also basic human behavior.”

Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Yiannis Plakiotakis, during his visit to Mytilini, sent a message that “Greece, the coast guard, men and women, defend the maritime borders of our country with courage, resolutely, with respect for international law, saving human lives, but at the same time protecting the maritime borders of the European Union.” Noting that for the past three years the state has been reinforcing the coast guard with new equipment and ships, he said: “Greece is determined and ready, if necessary, to defend its sovereign rights.”

Yiannis Plakiotakis noted that during his visit he also met with representatives of Frontex, “the largest agency currently contributing to the strengthening of the role of the Coast Guard and the improvement of its activities.”
