London will soon begin deporting illegal migrants to Rwanda; the corresponding law, under pressure from the government, was approved by the House of Lords on April 23.
How writes Deutsche Welle, previously Rishi Sunak, the British prime minister, said parliament would sit as long as it took to approve the law by Tuesday: “No buts or ifs. They will go to Rwanda.” The bill, passed in both houses of parliament, will come into force after it is signed by the British King Charles III.
Under the document, migrants who entered the UK illegally will be sent on commercial flights to Rwanda, where they can claim asylum. They cannot be returned to the UK.
Thus, writes Reuters, the government plans to block the flow of illegal migration across the English Channel, which tens of thousands of migrants cross every year, and destroy the business of people smugglers.
This idea first appeared and was announced by Boris Johnson, ex-Prime Minister of Great Britain, in 2022. It was assumed that in return for hosting illegal migrants, Rwanda would receive millions of dollars in investments from London for economic development.
However, the initiative of the British Prime Minister caused a storm of criticism in society and European countries. In June 2022, the first flight on which authorities wanted to deport 30 illegal migrants to Rwanda was canceled at the last minute due to a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights.
Current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promises to send the first flights of migrants being deported from the UK in July this year.
