October 1 at Irodio Ballet "Giselle" performed by the ballet troupe of the National Opera Theater of Odessa

In ancient Herodio there will be a grandiose performance of classical ballet. The ballet and orchestra of the Odessa National Opera, as part of a full troupe of 150 people and as part of a pan-European tour that began in July in the Netherlands, come to Athens to present Adolf Adam’s masterpiece “Giselle”.

Giselle is one of the most popular works with emotional fluctuations, perfect choreographic debuts and high technical demands on the dancers. But also a unique, perhaps, achievement of the romantic period, which has survived to this day, without losing a trace of its power. It is no coincidence that this is one of the most beloved ballets in the history of dance.

The ballet “Giselle” to the music of Adolphe Adam is a favorite work of every dancer, deifying unrequited love and mourning hearts desperately in need of love. The full name is Giselle ou les Wilis. It was written in 1841 and is considered one of the first romantic ballets, and one of the few from that period, that is performed today with great success.

Giselle is a young peasant woman who falls in love with the aristocrat Albrecht, unaware of his true origins. However, the revelation of his true identity, as well as the engagement to a girl from his class, drive Giselle to madness, and a little later, the heroine kills herself with her lover’s sword. In the second part, the repentant Albrecht comes to the forest at night, to the grave of Giselle, asking for forgiveness. There, he is trapped by the spirits of women betrayed by love, who, with their queen Myrtle, come out at night and denounce any man who gets in their way, making him dance to death. But the power of Giselle’s love is so great that she not only forgives her beloved, but also saves his life from the spell of other spirits.
