Poland is ready to assist Ukraine in the return of draft dodgers

Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysh, the Polish Minister of Defense, announced his readiness to return men of military age to Ukraine to “fulfill their civic duty.”

The Polish minister said this in an interview with Polsat News TV channel, quotes his Reuters:

“I think many Poles are outraged when they see young Ukrainian guys in hotels and cafes and hear how much effort we have to make to help Ukraine.”

He noted that Poland had already offered to help Ukraine in the past so that those liable for military service would return to their country and “fulfill their civic duty.” He said “any kind of support is possible”, referring to how Poland would react if Kyiv asked for help in returning home those who may lose the right to stay in Poland after their passports expire.

Reuters reports, citing Eurostat data, that as of January 2024, countries EU There are 4.3 million Ukrainians, of whom 860,000 are adult men. Poland has granted temporary protected status to 950,000 Ukrainians, the second highest number after Germany.

Meanwhile, the representative of the US State Department in Brussels, Daniel Isaac, considers the decision of the Ukrainian authorities to suspend the provision of consular services to men of mobilization age to be a “complex issue”; the US government does not yet have a position or decision on this issue.

Commenting on whether the US government would help Ukraine bring the men home, Isaac said it was a “complex question” but that “the Ukrainian government has the right to determine its policy.” The State Department spokesman recalled that countries in Europe and to a certain extent the United States hosted Ukrainians who fled the full-scale Russian invasion, and this “was another important part” of their support.
