“Aromatic Art in Ancient Greece”: the 1st Perfume Symposium took place in Athens

The extraordinary event took place at the Heraklion Museum in Athens with the participation of many famous speakers, led by the Center for Aromatic Arts and its founder, perfumer Zoe Strandjalis.

The main goal of “Οι Αρωματικές Τέχνες στην Αρχαία Ελλάδα” is to use the knowledge and experience of all participants to combine a diverse mosaic of knowledge and memories of the “science of poetic pleasure” (as Aristotle characterizes “μυρεψικ ή”), emphasizing the richness of aromas that were important in the lives of our ancestors.

Myrepsos is the contents of a small golden pot containing oils of rose, backgammon and iris, and its fragrant composition is able to transcend time, uniting the depths of centuries with the depths of the soul.

The composition of perfumes as a means of hygiene, healing, seduction, well-being and communication with the gods, as well as the use of aromatic plants by Hippocrates, Asclepius and Dioscorides, became the main pillars of the symposium. The topic was also covered synesthesia.

Synesthesia (from ancient Greek συναίσθηση < σύν “together” + αἴσθησις “sensation”) or Shereshevsky syndrome is a neurological phenomenon in which irritation in one sensory or cognitive system leads to an automatic, involuntary response in another sensory system.

During the event, participants and guests were told about style, trends and selection of fragrances. The program was also intended for those who wanted to expand their perfume horizons and olfactory vocabulary, get acquainted with the main development milestones and key trends in perfumery. And the most important thing is to study various methods for selecting fragrances and try them in practice.

It is planned to regularly hold relevant thematic events starting this year. More information about participation, speakers and the program can be found at www.aromaticartshub.com.
