The “visiting card” of Paris, the Eiffel Tower, suffers from corrosion and requires immediate repair.
“Since 2010, the famous Parisian tower has been in need of repair due to rust that is simply destroying it,” the French publication is sounding the alarm. Mariannereferring to confidential documents.
The publication notes that “in some places, rust eats it, like a tree thermists.” The reason is banal – in those places where, due to the age of the monument, paint falls off, iron comes into contact with water and oxygen.
In preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games, in 2018, the 20th renovation of the tower began. It was supposed to clean a third of the structure and apply two coats of new paint to it to contain corrosion. But… the pandemic disrupted the plans. The work had to be postponed, and in addition to everything, lead was found in the old paint.
So now the repair will be “cosmetic”, and only 5% of the Eiffel Tower will be subjected to it. An unnamed official involved in the trial told Marianne:
“It’s unlikely she’ll fall tomorrow morning, but she’s really not in very good condition.”
The attraction is run by Sete, and they really don’t want to close the tourist site for a long time – this will lead to a loss of income. The Eiffel Tower is the fourth most visited place in Paris after Disneyland, the Louvre and Versailles.
