Euronews strongly denies allegations of fake news

In response to the blocking of Euronews, rejecting the accusations against him, he calls for compliance with article 19 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights on freedom of the media.

Roskomnadzor, Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media, has taken off the air and blocked the websites of Euronews, Europe’s leading international news channel, for its coverage of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In response, the publication issued a statement.

euronews claims to have received no official appeals and strongly denies allegations of spreading “fake news” and calling on citizens to protest, with an unacceptable threat of criminal liability:

We strongly condemn this restriction on millions of people in Russia who rely on Euronews more than ever for fact-based news amid increasing disinformation and propaganda. In accordance with Article 19 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which Russia is a signatory, we call on the Russian media oversight agency to unblock Euronews and allow Russians to freely hold their own opinions and seek, receive and disseminate information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers, as stated in the declaration.

For more than 20 years, Euronews, a unique Russian-language service on the market, has been an important independent source of information for millions of Russians, reaching more than 30 million television households and many more people on its digital platforms. Euronews is not only the most viewed, but also the most well-known and trusted international news brand in Russia.

The Russian-language edition of Euronews will continue to be broadcast live on digital platforms, which can be accessed via VPN. Further dissemination opportunities are currently being explored and will be communicated in due course.

The Russian-language edition of Euronews continues to provide its services in many countries. Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, traffic on its digital platforms has skyrocketed. In Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and many other countries, the digital audience of Euronews has tripled in the last month.
