The Serbian Orthodox Monastery of Khilandar on Mount Athos is closed to pilgrims

The reason for the closure of the Serbian monastery of Khilandar on Mount Athos was the coronavirus – a high incidence of covid was recorded among its monks, the Foundation of the Holy Monastery said.

The visit to the pilgrims has been canceled from November 21, 2021, according to the Foundation of the Holy Monastery on its website. The management of the monastery posted an announcement on its official website:

“Due to the large number of COVID-19 patients in Zilandar, travel to the monastery is not possible in the future.”

Changes in the visiting regime will be announced later.

The Khilandar Monastery on Mount Athos was founded by the Serbian Archbishop Savva in 1198. It is an important center of Serbian culture and spirituality, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery houses the richest collection of ancient icons, manuscripts and frescoes. Serbian authorities have passed a law to protect the historical heritage of the Khilandar Monastery on Mount Athos.
