We will be counted: the population census is coming

With the main motto “Count all” (“Όλοι Μετράμε”), a decade later, Greece is again making a population census, which will begin at the end of the month. Due to the special period and the coronavirus, a new technique had to be chosen for its implementation.

Thus, this year’s census will include an electronic “presence” statement. While those who have not succeeded in using this method, the specialist will make a home visit, taking the census using the old traditional door-to-door method.

An ELSTAT employee who knocks on your door is required to show identification and to comply with all necessary measures to protect public health.

On the electronic platform www.gov.gr, using codes with access through the TAXIS system, a representative of the household will be able to fill out a questionnaire for himself and his family members.

The second stage will last from November 27 to mid-December and will apply to those citizens who, for any reason (for example, due to ignorance of new technologies), cannot “check in” electronically.

Usually all the “counted” ones fear whether the data collected by ELSTAT is safe, where it is being transferred, and whether questions about religion or political beliefs are included in the list of mandatory ones.

Mr. Thanopoulos reassures: “All data collected by ELSTAT (National Statistical Office) in the context of the population census is confidential. The personal data collected by the statistical office in the context of its duties and the processes for which it is responsible is not transferred to any other public service or private company, neither in the European Union, nor in countries outside the EU, nor to any other international organization. The data obtained during the population census are used exclusively for the production of aggregated statistics. At the same time, no confidential personal data is requested or recorded by service representatives who come to the house. “

Census

In this way, no information is collected about sensitive personal data (for example, about religious, political or philosophical beliefs, trade union affiliation, racial or ethnic origin, gender or sexual orientation, health problems).

To obtain statistical information related to such issues, there are specially designed and targeted surveys that take into account a number of social parameters, nothing more.
