Fighting tax evasion: artificial intelligence to help

The Independent Authority for Revenue (AADE) continues to crack down on evaders with two new units – a dedicated digital cross-check service and a HM Revenue & Customs and Special Forces investigation centre.

Ambitious AADE operating program target for tax evasion revenues in 2024 of €1.7 billion will activate a new service that will fully exploit the potential of technology, with a particular focus on analyzing large volumes of data and collecting information from digital invoicing systems.

Using artificial intelligence, comparative analysis and scanning the Internet and social networks, the service will compare data on income and real estate of Greek citizens.

According to ERT, the unit will immediately focus on cross-checking income and asset data across 120,000 taxpayer identification numbers, and will review estimated taxes for more than 20,000 taxpayers who did not declare their income in previous years.

The operational plan reveals audit objectives such as verifying compliance with property registration numbers through AADE's collaboration with short-term rental platforms, identifying undeclared income from short-term rentals, and developing a statistical methodology to identify suspicious transactions.

The Special Purpose Center for Tax and Customs Audits and Investigations will act as a central coordination center to enhance cooperation and efficiency in the fight against tax and customs violations.
