Without getting out of bed, you can earn…18 thousand euros

In Germany they offer those who wish to receive 18,000 euros. Not just like that, but on fairly attractive terms. The main thing is to lie in bed without getting up for two months. A prank?

As it turns out, participants are required for a study that will be conducted by the German Aviation and Space Center in Cologne. The project started on April 10. The first group of “lucky ones” whose applications will be approved will be accepted in September. This means 60 days in bed at a six-degree angle.

At first glance it sounds good: there is no need to rush anywhere, sleep as much as you want and do nothing. But it's not that simple. A 6-degree bed tilt means your head will always be lower than your feet. In this situation, there will be a rush of fluids to the head, and all internal systems of the body will have to be rebuilt. In addition, the load on the muscles will change, tells D.W.

The study will consist of finding out what will happen to the human body in a position close to that in which real astronauts have to be. It is carried out so that later, during a real space mission, there are no surprises: the astronauts will know how to properly prepare for long flights. Participants will be divided into groups:

  1. Members of one group will have to exercise while lying down, performing endurance exercises and training muscles.
  2. The muscles of the subjects of the other group will contract with the help of electrical impulses – during EMS training.

By comparing different methods and results, scientists will be able to determine how more effectively they can maintain the vitality of an astronaut’s body. Similar studies have been conducted since the 1980s. One group will have to go to bed in September 2024, the other in April 2025. For participation, each of the subjects will receive 18 thousand euros. Women and men aged 24 to 55 years, height from 1.53 to 1.90 meters, with a body mass index (BMI) from 18 to 30 are eligible for selection. They must be healthy, not smoke and speak good German .

The research will be carried out in Cologne – where the headquarters of the German Aviation and Space Center is located. After lying in bed for two months, participants will be studied for three months. More information about how to become a participant in the project – Online DLR.
