Sydney attack: killer – 40-year-old schizophrenic and drug addict

The man responsible for the murder of six people at a Sydney shopping center is dead. His identity has been established.

According to The Telegraph, the suspect has been identified by the police. It is known that killed six people in a Sydney shopping centre, Joel Koshy had a mental disorder and was interested in guns. He had recently moved from Queensland to Sydney and was homeless. Cauchy suffered from schizophrenia and used drugs including methamphetamine and psychedelics. He has no criminal history but is known to authorities in his home state.

Joel Koshy had lunch at a curry restaurant in Bondi Junction on Saturday before going for a walk around Westfield Shopping Centre. Pulling a knife from his backpack, he attacked shoppers, injuring at least 17 people, including a baby lying in a stroller and his mother, Dr. Ashley Goode. The woman died in hospital on Saturday evening, the baby is in the hospital.

The victims of the attack included four women aged between 20 and 55 years and a man in his 30s. New South Wales Police said on Sunday morning, quotes The Telegraph:

“Twelve others, including nine women, two men and a nine-month-old baby, were stabbed and taken to various hospitals in Sydney.”

Cauchy was shot by policewoman Inspector Amy Scott and died despite resuscitation efforts. Anthony Cook, assistant commissioner of New South Wales Police, said police searched the storage container used by the killer:

“We are continuing to work on profiling the offender but at this stage it is very clear to us that this is linked to the person’s mental health. At this point, there is still nothing – no information that we have received, no evidence that we have discovered, no intelligence that we have collected – that would suggest that this was driven by any particular motivation, ideology or anything – something else.”
