Governor of Attica promises 640 million euros to support vulnerable social groups

The Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, announced the strengthening of vulnerable and susceptible social groups with targeted actions worth 640 million euros until 2027.

He announced this while speaking at the 1st annual conference of the Organization of Social Benefits and Social Solidarity under the motto “CUSTODY: yesterday, today, tomorrow”, held in the library of parliament, quotes CNN Greece:

“640 million euros from the Attica region to support vulnerable populations. Mitigating the consequences caused by the crisis is the responsibility of the Attica region. The sensitivity of the state is reflected in its policies. Supporting vulnerable fellow citizens is our responsibility.”

The Governor of Attica stated that 640 million euros will be allocated:

  • • €410 million will come from ΕΣΠΑ for 2021–2027.
  • • 200 million euros come from the Operational Program of the European Aid to the Needy Fund (ΤΕΒΑ).
  • • 30 million euros from own resources.

Nikos Hardalias also assured:

“Greek society has experienced two major crises in recent years: the financial crisis in the 2010s and the subsequent pandemic. Both left their negative mark on the incomes and living standards of citizens. Mitigating these impacts by supporting our vulnerable fellow citizens is our responsibility.”

Mr. Hardalias highlighted the TEBA 2021-2027 program aimed at minimum guaranteed income recipients and households experiencing extreme poverty, with a special focus on supporting children:

“Our fellow citizens, who have suffered from successive crises and are facing difficulties in their daily lives, are not beggars. The State must make its contribution with the greatest possible discretion. And that's what we do. Food and basic material assistance is accompanied by actions aimed at supporting the social inclusion of beneficiaries, with special attention to be paid to children of preschool and school age and their families, the unemployed, women, beneficiaries over 65 years of age, people with disabilities, third-country nationals, the homeless and the gypsies.”

The regional governor noted that the social budget of the Attica region includes the financing of a number of actions and activities from its own resources for social structures for the protection of children, the elderly, people with disabilities, structures for women victims of violence and their children, for independent living, for feeding and homeless accommodation, for elderly care facilities, kindergartens, educational institutions, rehabilitation and psychological support centers for people with disabilities, services for the social and professional inclusion of marginalized individuals and groups, and actions for the prevention of addictions and the promotion of psychosocial health.

He mentioned the 167 National Social Security System certified agencies that provide primary, secondary and tertiary social care services to vulnerable and disadvantaged groups:

“These actions create a safety net and safety net for our region’s vulnerable groups. They strengthen social cohesion. But they are not enough. This requires constant effort. New initiatives, new actions aimed at reducing social inequality and improving social indicators. For balanced and fair development for all. Because, as PECA rightly states in its identity card: “Development without solidarity is not equitable development.”
