A trick to avoid paying tolls on Attiki Odos

There is no end to the cases of refusal to pay the fare, and “stunt drivers” are inventing more and more new ways to break through the barrier for nothing.

The “Don't Pay” movement has made a name for itself at toll booths on Greek highways: many drivers strive to pass through them for free. The toll on Attiki Odos, a modern motorway that hundreds of thousands of drivers choose every day to bypass the center of the capital and reach their destination faster, is also a “playground” for “stunt” drivers.

As can be seen in numerous videos posted on the Internet, “refuseniks sit on the tail” of the vehicle in front. When the driver pays the fare and the barrier opens, they try to sneak through as a “train.” This whole idea looks even easier for motorcyclists, who wait patiently to the right of the cars, and as soon as the barrier opens, they step on the gas.

The video has a sarcastic caption: “The cost of stitches in the hospital is equal to a free ride” (meaning a blow to the head with a barrier if you didn’t manage to get through).

Of course, “stuntmen” prefer electronic highway toll booths, which operate automatically by reading the signal from transponders.

Risky refusal drivers, noticing which vehicle is heading into a given lane, follow it at arm's length until the car reaches the automatic toll booth. And when the barrier opens, they accelerate in order to take advantage of the (sufficient for them) time between the opening and closing of the barrier to get through “for nothing.” Thereby saving money at the expense of conscientious payers.
