The Parliament of the Republic of Cyprus has approved a bill establishing the Ministry of Migration. The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Konstantinos Ioannou, called this decision “landmark for the country.”
It is his department that is now dealing with issues that will be transferred to the jurisdiction of the new ministry, leaving for the Ministry of Internal Affairs the issuance of IDs and passports to citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, a package of laws on marriage and civil unions.
New ministry writes web.telegram.org, will oversee migration policy: issues of issuing residence permits, granting citizenship by naturalization, political refugee status and humanitarian status. In the near future, Nikos Christodoulides, President of the Republic of Cyprus, will appoint the first Minister of Migration, who will create the structure of the ministry and form a team.
