The explosion of a flare leads to the death of a carnival participant in Crete


A 33-year-old man died in eastern Crete on Sunday when a flare he fired exploded. The man attended the carnival celebrations in Agios Nikolaos on Sunday with two friends.

The man was rushed to hospital with a heavily bleeding wound in the abdomen and died a few hours laterdespite doctors’ attempts to save him.

The man and his friends took 20 nautical flares with them when they joined the carnival crowd. They had already set off almost all the flares when the victim decided to light another one. It is unknown whether the rocket exploded due to poor handling or expired and became lodged in his stomach.

Police arrested two of the victim’s friends and confiscated the remains of ten flares that had already exploded. Those arrested handed over two more flares to the authorities. The men said they received expired marine flares from the boat’s owner, according to state broadcaster ERT. They declined to identify him.

Marine flares can be easily purchased from fishing shops by presenting your fishing vessel’s license as they are used at sea to make distress signals. The case is being investigated by a local prosecutor. The deceased was the owner of a bakery and was planning to get married soon.

An 18-year-old offender who was arrested and confessed to setting fire and throwing a rocket on the night of December 7 has been charged with premeditated murder. The sports fan is accused of antisocial behavior, attempted murder (later – premeditated murder), possession of explosive and incendiary materials, an explosion that resulted in a danger to human life and health, as well as disturbing the peace and possession of flares.
