According to the fire department, the fire started at 09.40 in the morning, in a cell located next to the administrative center of Athos Karyes.

On March 3, 2024, on Holy Mount Athos, the cell in the monastery of the Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon, belonging to the Kutlumush Monastery, almost completely burned down. According to Greek media, the fire in the cell, which is located next to the administrative center, began at 09.40 in the morning.

The fire quickly grew in size, and the task was to prevent it from spreading to the neighboring cells, which were very close, where dozens of monks lived. Many monks from neighboring cells, as well as from Karyes, who saw the flames and ran to help, rushed into “battle” with the flames. 5 fire service vehicles also took part in its neutralization.

According to available information, the cell building is almost completely destroyed, and efforts are currently being made to save the temple. Monk Theophylact, who lives in his cell, was not injured.

On the evening of March 1, a fire also occurred in a monastic cell on Arkhangelskaya Square near the Stavronikita Monastery on Mount Athos. The fire service tried to put it out with two vehicles and six people. The fire did not threaten people’s lives.
