On February 29, 2024, in the area of western Greece, officers of the Internal Affairs Service of the ELAS security forces arrested a doctor, a foreigner and two visitors.
A case has been opened against the detainees on charges of bribery of an employee, falsification of medical documents, breach of official duties, bribery and violation of the immigration code.
A complaint was reportedly filed against the doctor, alleging that he systematically issued false medical certificates to foreigners for a fee in order to ensure their legal stay in our country. For this purpose, he collaborated with a foreign intermediary, whom interested parties contacted to obtain the appropriate certificates.
As a result of the preliminary investigation, as well as the collection and comparison of the data obtained, law enforcement agencies established the doctor’s illegal activities. As part of an operation carried out at a doctor’s workplace, two visitors were arrested at the moment when they were supposed to hand over a sum of money (a bribe) to the doctor. Passports of third parties that he owned illegally, as well as medical certificates issued by a doctor, were found in the foreigner’s house. In total, during the searches the following were discovered and seized:
- cash in the amount of 3870 euros,
- 4 passports of third parties,
- 2 ready-made medical certificates.
As it turned out, over the past year, the doctor increased the prescription of drugs to the pharmaceutical company by 60% (whose representatives gave him a certain amount in the form of remuneration for this). In addition, investigations confirmed that at least eight false medical certificates were issued to foreigners. Those arrested will appear before the competent prosecutor.
