Eurostat: what goods and services do Greeks purchase online?


Digitalization is gaining momentum, which is reflected in sales markets. Eurostat experts answered the question about what consumers prefer to buy on the Internet.

The online service is becoming increasingly popular in Greece as digitalization has spread to all sectors of the economy. Online purchases of certain categories of goods and services grow exponentiallyconsumers systematically prefer e-commerce to physical stores.

In Europe, 91% of citizens have access to the Internet, and 56% have basic and advanced digital skills to perform various activities in the digital world.

As lifestyles change and digitalization steadily gains momentum, the demands of citizens turning to the Internet are growing. The latest Eurostat data on e-commerce for 2023 shows the scale of the phenomenon:

  • In Greece, almost three out of four (73.55%) respondents bought clothing, shoes or accessories in the previous quarter. This percentage was higher than the average EU (69.7%), and lower than Cyprus, which leads with 82.3%.
  • More than four in ten (44.13%) have ordered food online from restaurants, fast food chains and catering, compared to almost 30% in the EU. Once again, Cyprus leads the way in online orders with a percentage of 81.7%.
  • Every third (or more) purchased electronic tickets for transport (38.71%) or rented a car (35.37%). In both areas these figures are slightly higher than in the EU (32.78% and 33.18% respectively), with Norway leading (with 50%) in car rental and e-ticketing for transport with 72.3%.
  • Our country lags behind the EU average (36.1%) in the market for the sale of electronic tickets (32.25%) for cultural or other events. Denmark comes first with 56%.
  • The percentage of purchases of cosmetics and beauty products is also lower (25.28%) compared to 28.24% in the EU. In first place, with a slight difference from Norway (38.5%), is Sweden with 39.1%.
  • Our country lags well behind the EU average of 34.5% for streaming and downloading services, with one in four (26.31%) saying they buy services online. Norway ranks first in the category with 71.4%.
