What and "how expired" will be sold in supermarkets from March


The Greek Ministry of Development has begun introducing measures to combat inflation. In this context, amendments to ministerial decisions 6969/30-01-2024 and 92566/11-10-2023 were approved.

In particular, according to the Ministry of Development, the following changes are taking place:

1. Exemption from the ban on promotions for a period of 3 months applies to products that have previously experienced price increases, provided that their expiration date is ending/approaching. Requires special markings “Product with expiration date”. The goal is to combat the phenomenon of large-scale food waste or the destruction of food stocks in warehouses that could be made available at particularly low prices to interested buyers.

This amendment provides mutual benefit for business and consumerswhile promoting the adoption of new environmentally sustainable behavior patterns among citizens.

2. The list of products that are subject to inspection for price increases and cannot, according to current legislation, carry out promotions over the next three months has also been expanded.

3. The list of goods for which price reductions are provided from March 1, 2024 has also been expanded, to which the category of feminine pads has been added (will come into force on March 20).

4. The list of fresh products to which “net prices” apply has been expanded by adding the categories “fresh goat meat” and “fresh lamb”.

For products of companies for which price increases have been announced, within 3 months The following promotions are not allowed:

a) the sale of a product that is in any way indicated to be sold at a lower price (such as a discount or offer),

b) the sale of a product for which it is stated that it is sold in a package containing an additional quantity as a “gift” for consumers,

c) the sale of multiple packages consisting of more than one identical packaged product that is in any way stated to contain one or more “GIFT” packages, or is offered at a lower price, such as a discount or special offer ,

d) sale of a product for which it is stated that it is sold together with another product that is different from it, as a “GIFT” (for example, shower gel + washcloth),

e) selling a product using a coupon (providing a discount), gift certificate

(e) Participation in an advertisement (printed brochure) by a retailer that states or implies that the product is offered at a price favorable to the consumer (for example, references such as “only”, “best price”, “excellent price”, “bargain”) deal”).

This measure also applies to imported products.
