"Golden feta": the price reached 12-15 euros per kilogram

President of the National Union of Agricultural Cooperatives ETΘEAΣ (Εθνική Ένωση Αγροτικών Συνεταιρισμών) Pavlos Satolias spoke about how the situation has reached a point where feta prices have reached 15 euros per kilogram.

“I don’t even want to talk about prices for olive oil this year; the question is how to return the situation to its previous course. Many of my farmer friends who used to sell butter now don’t even have any left for themselves. Problems with the olive harvest (due to bad weather) have become a global phenomenon in Italy, Spain and here. This led to a rapid rise in prices. As for other products, many sell oil (and I don’t even understand what that is!). They sell feta – passing off anything as it – white cheese and so on… We need a serious state that has a mechanism that will work as a deterrent. Not with fines, but, for example, with deprivation of the license of a manufacturing enterprise in the industry or promotion on the market, if it is a company. And secondly, the names of the companies that are making money need to be made public. This is what we have always asked for,” he said at the beginning of his interview.

“Over the past 1.5 years, we have not had an increase in prices for feta. Its price is high, it cannot be low. We have feta for 10.5-12 euros per kilogram, and we also have feta for 14-15 euros per kilogram (packaged). This way the consumer has options from which to choose. These are not detergents,” Mr. Satolias added.
