Supermarkets will sell all expired food products at reduced prices

In its decision, the Ministry of Development essentially gives permission to large supermarkets to unload their stocks of expired products by selling them at lower prices.

It is included in four new decisions to… combat prices and strengthen market controls announced by the Ministry of Development. According to the ministry statement, after changes are made to the relevant regulations, discounts and other promotions will be allowed on products that are close to their expiration date. Such products will require special labeling with the inscription “Product with a close expiration date.”

They also added a bit of “green transition” by saying that the Ministry of Development’s goal is to discourage food wastage or destruction of stocks that may be available at very low prices to interested consumers who will soon see themselves being forced to buy food only before throwing it away them into the trash bin.

At the same time, the list of products subject to price control is expanded and supplemented, and the category of menstrual products is added to the list of products for which price reductions are provided from March 1, 2024.

This is stated in more detail in the message of the Ministry of Development:

Amendments to ministerial resolutions 6969/30-01-2024 and 92566/11-10-2023 were approved:

  1. An exemption from the ban on promotional activities for 3 months is provided for products that have previously been subject to price increases if they are close to expiration. Such products require special labeling with the inscription “Product with a close expiration date.”
This is done in particular to combat food waste or the destruction of stocks that could be made available at very low prices to the consumers concerned.
This amendment provides mutual benefits for businesses and consumers, and encourages the adoption of new environmentally sustainable behaviors by citizens and the supply chain (again, individual responsibility).
  2. It expands and increases the list of products that are subject to price controls and cannot, in accordance with current legislation, be the subject of advertising activities for the next three months.
  3. The list of goods for which price reductions are provided from March 1, 2024 has also been expanded; the category of menstrual products has been added to it from March 20.
  4. The list of fresh products to which “net prices” apply has been expanded to include the categories “fresh goat meat” and “fresh lamb”.

It is worth noting that such price reductions were previously used in all retail chains in Greece, but were not regulated by law. Therefore, many supermarkets did not reduce prices on goods that were approaching their expiration dates, sometimes even selling expired goods. Considering the deplorable financial situation For the majority of the Greek population, such a measure will be a big hit. Now the main thing is not to get health problems due to expired products…
