One gesture and you can lose your driver’s license for 60 days

A small, but not so harmless movement can cause the deprivation of a driver’s license, as well as the vehicle registration certificate for 2 months.

Among the many bad habits of Greek drivers is throwing garbage out of the car window. Of course, even those who profess to be environmentally conscious do not miss the opportunity to throw cigarette butts out the window, apparently believing that the immortal Greek “gopa” does not fall into the broader category of waste.

The law, of course, has a different opinion on this matter. And he mercilessly punishes those who throw cigarette butts on the road (“to be discouraging”). Reference to article of law 4530/2018 “offence of throwing a cigarette out of a vehicle” άρθρου του 29) is set out in paragraph of Article 29.

It states: “Drivers of all types of vehicles who throw objects or substances outside their vehicle that pollute the environment or may cause a fire or accident, such as cigarettes, are punishable by the immediate confiscation of their registration certificate and driving license for a period of sixty days.”

So, if a driver is “caught” throwing a cigarette out of a car, then traffic police officers can begin to take measures established by law.

However, the traffic police not the only competent authority capable of “punishing” all those who are indifferent to compliance with traffic rules. The fire service may also impose a fine on the violator, as defined in clause 19/2020 of the fire safety regulations “Procedure for imposing administrative fines for violation of the regulations of fire safety legislation” (αρ. 19/2020 Πυροσβεστική Διάταξη με θέμα ” Διαδικασία επιβολής διοικητικών ??? ροστασίας”).

In particular, the violation is the throwing of a lit cigarette, matches and other materials onto dry grass and/or near other flammable or explosive materials or objects – Art. 4/2012 Fire Service (αρ. 4/2012 Πυροσβεστικής Διάταξης).

The basic fine is 150 euros, but the fine increases depending on the risk category, that is, the known fire risk map of the General Secretariat of Civil Protection.

In accordance with Article 4 “Calculation of fines” in case of non-compliance with the provisions of the set of fire safety rules (άρθρο 4 “Υπολογισμός Προστίμου” της Πυροσβεστικής Διάτα ξης), the minimum possible fine imposed is 200 euros.
