Rethymno: a pregnant teacher was beaten by a school student during a lesson

A case of unmotivated aggression occurred at a school in Rethymno, when a pregnant substitute teacher was brutally attacked by a student who hit her in the stomach during a lesson!

According to rethemnosnews.gr, despite the initial shock, the teacher is in good health and is not in danger. The incredible incident that occurred in the school office was immediately reported to the school management and the director of secondary education. It is noted that the prescribed pedagogical procedures were followed in connection with the incident and the student was severely punished.

The head of the primary school, Manousos Maragakis, who confirmed the incident and spoke to local media, said: “In connection with the incident, all prescribed pedagogical measures have been taken to deal with the student and improve the pedagogical climate in the school between the children and the teacher. Efforts are being made together with everyone to return children to everyday life and improve the teaching climate.”

ELME of Rethymno released a statement saying that it stands in all moral and practical respects on the side of the teacher who was brutally attacked by a student in a school in the prefecture of Rethymno during a lesson.

It is noted that parents and teachers are of great concern about the rapid increase in cases of teenage violence in Rethymno schools, since recently children aged 12 to 18 years have been demonstrating delinquent behavior. In the ELME announcement of the city of Rethymnon we read:

“In connection with the incident involving the attack of a student on a colleague, the board of ELME Rethymno stands in all moral and practical respects on the side of a fellow MP who was brutally attacked by a student in one of the schools in the prefecture of Rethymno during a lesson.

As has been repeatedly noted, the normalization of violence, the lack of psychologists and social workers, the understaffing of support structures, the exclusion of the Greek school from the arts and social sciences, and other factors, combined with the deliberate and methodical devaluation of teachers in our country, create fertile ground for the phenomena of violence with sides of parents or students who are not “one”.

Especially for fellow substitutes, who are often called to work long before the start of the school year, who work in two, three or more schools, and who have to go from mastering the curriculum to getting to know their students in a very short time, the educational reality becomes even more more severe and difficult.

We have a responsibility to be on their side, as unions and as individuals. The Board of ELME of Rethymno invites all colleagues who have encountered or are experiencing any form of aggressive behavior or pressure from parents, students, members of the administration, etc., to contact the union directly. Our help, moral, legal, trade union, should be taken for granted.”
