“Wolf Moon” – the first full moon of 2024

Created DELL E3

The first full moon of the year, also known as the Wolf Moon, will rise in the sky overnight from Thursday (1/25) to Friday. In Greece, the January full moon will reach its peak at 00:12.

Thursday’s full moon is one of the few astronomical events of the winter, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Landa. As USAToday reports, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the first full moon of the year is known as the “Wolf Moon” because wolves howl loudly during this month. People used to think that wolves howled in winter because they were hungry, but today we know that they do so for a variety of reasons, such as to locate other pack members, strengthen social bonds, mark their territory, and coordinate hunts.

The names of full moons come from those given to them by the indigenous tribes of North America and Canada. The January Full Moon is also known by the following names: the “Central Moon” because it occurs around midwinter, the “Cold Moon”, the “Ice Moon” and the “Hard Moon”.

According to ERT, The next full moon will be seen on February 24th. It is called the “Snow Moon” due to the heavy snowfalls that often occur this month. This will be the last full moon before the arrival of astronomical spring on March 19, according to AccuWeather.
