Winter has come to Greece: snowfall on Parnitha

The new wave of bad weather brings with it intense phenomena that are expected to intensify in the next few hours: the first snow fell as early as midday on Tuesday (9/01) in Parnitha, while frost was felt throughout Attica.

Many other regions of the country are experiencing a sharp drop in temperature. The Aegean region and the eastern side of mainland Greece are experiencing gale-force winds, with northeasterly wind gusts exceeding 80 kilometers per hour. In Attica, on Mount Parnitha, wind gusts exceeded 98 kilometers per hour.

The combination of barometric low pressure and cold air masses also resulted in low-level snowfall in Northern Greece, Macedonia, Thrace and the North Aegean islands.

In the central and southern parts of the mainland, snow will fall at an altitude of 600-400 meters and mainly in the areas of Messinia, Karditsa, Trikala, central Sterea, central and eastern Peloponnese.

Due to snowfall and frost traffic was stopped on Parnitos Avenue, from the height of the cable car, in the Acharne area. Problems also arose on train service between Athens and ΣΚΑ – Afidnes stations: A tree fell on the tracks near Dhekelia, causing train services to stop, reports Hellenic Train. Passengers of the Intercity 53 and Intercity 54 trains on the Athens-Afidnes section will be served by buses. Delays are expected on all routes to and from Athens. At the same time, due to bad weather, the departure of ships from the port of Heraklion on Crete, heading to Piraeus, was prohibited.

The air temperature throughout the country has dropped sharply and will range from +05 to +07°C in the north and central regions, from +10 to +12°C in the rest of the mainland. In the morning and evening hours, frosts will be observed in places in the north of the continent.
