Taxi: POS terminals, fines for evaders

According to the new legislation, which will come into force in a few days, the time has come to install POS machines in all taxis in the country.

Taxi owners must by the end of January 2024, purchase electronic contactless payment systems using cards (POS), as otherwise large fines will be imposed. In accordance with Ministerial Decision 119899/2023 (Government Gazette B’ 7115/18-12-2023), taxi owners accept payment methods using payment cards, including such as the IRIS service (online payments).

However for the period from 1 January 2024 to 1 March 2024, the imposition of a fine for non-compliance of €1,500 is suspended if it is proven that they have validly submitted a corresponding request for the supply of a card terminal before 31 January 2024 and are awaiting installation.

For digital POS terminals, all payment card payment methods and direct account-to-account payment methods are accepted. In addition to Taxi, companies providing leasing services are required to accept credit and debit cards when servicing customers starting January 1.
