Residents EU made more than 92 million leisure trips, corresponding to 8.6% of all trips taken in December 2023.
Of these, 73 million were domestic trips, representing 9% of total domestic trips taken in 2023. Another 19 million trips were made abroad, accounting for 7.1% of total trips abroad.
According to Eurostat, a long tradition give preference to domestic travel during the winter holidays and Christmas causes visible growth. In December 2023, domestic travel was almost 4 times higher than international travel (during the rest of the year, domestic travel averaged 3 times higher than international travel).
The increase in domestic travel at the end of the year can be attributed to people visiting friends and relatives. More than half of domestic trips were reported for this purpose in December (while in the rest of the year, approximately 1 in 3 tourist trips were reported for this purpose).
Who has traveled the most? Looking at the data by country, Romanians stand out: the majority of trips in 2023 will occur in December (17.1%). This is followed by residents of Bulgaria (12.5%) and Malta (11.8%). Travel in December accounted for 5.2% of total trips by residents of Greece, 6% of trips by residents of Lithuania and 6.4% of trips by residents of Sweden.
